Find a Government Job without passing your Postal Exam!

September 3, 2008
Quite often we receive emails from people who are looking for information on obtaining federal government jobs that are not related to the postal industry.  Although we feel strongly we are experts in helping people secure employement with the USPS we certainly do not feel qualified to hand out job advice that pertains to other government agencies.  With that being said, we have taken the time to ask around and find our what books people were using to find federal job information.  The book recommendations that came back to us were all the same for the most part.  Our top five Amazon book recommendations are listed below.  To order the book simple click on the photo to go directly to the Amazon purchase page!

The Life and Times of the Postal Workers Union.

August 6, 2008

In this week’s union news. On Monday July 28th Myke Reid testified to lawmakers about the postal service’s restructuring of mail facilities and the fact that the restructuring plan to make the US postal service more efficient did not include a candied overview of the private firms that the postal service uses for commercial mail. He argued that it created unnecessary redundancy and that the mail facilities should be saved and the private companies fired instead of the postal service closing its facilities and relying more and more on private companies to keep mail in the US moving. After his testimony even more members of the US House of Representatives signed onto the bill protecting the mail network as it stands and to protect valuable postal worker jobs. The co-sponsors on this piece of legislation now has reached over 100 and support for it continues to grow even as upper management drafts more privatization plans for bulk mail centers across the country.

Early Retirement Option
APUW President William Burrus beseeched employees eligible for the early retirement option to now take the USPS up on that so quickly. He advised members to take as long as possible before deciding due to the fact that the life long annuity will be a great deal less and that staying on and enjoying the cost of living adjustments and regular salary increases will ultimately mean larger payments for the workers over the long term. “The USPS would save about $1 million in salary, benefits, and retirement annuity for each such employee,” he (Burrus) said. (APUW.org, 7-30-08). You might want to give that VER another look.

The APUW endorsed Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) for the presidency in April and in July he thanked the union for their endorsement and promised to continue to support union jobs and the help stabilize the cash-strapped and struggling postal service.

The 19th annual biennial convention will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 18-22 with a post convention workshop on the 23rd of August.
